The open topology webservice
The idea behind the open-topology.org project was born three years ago, when we were on Lanzarote vacation and we decided to make a one day tour with our bicycles from the hotel to the timanfaya vulcano national park. This trip, planned as a nitty gritty sight seen tour ;-), expands into a long half island trip. After vacation we wanted to show what distance in length and height we drove against the passat wind to our acquaintances. So we started to look for a free topographical service that we could combine with any of the available routing planners, but there wasn' t any service like this.
Thanks to the SRTM shuttle mission there is a world wide set of topographical data which is available for free and so three years after our vacation I began to implement a service for topographical data. This data is used by this application and service to provide you a free accessible tool for topographical informations. In combination with other applications or services like the well known google-maps, you are now able to get all geographical informations about each point on earth.
